Support for FFN providers

Children being care for by family, friend or neighbor (FFN) caregivers in home settings is informal care. Children being cared for in professional centers and family home child care is more formal. FFN care is also known as license-exempt child care and "kith and kin" care.

Caregivers do not always have all the tools and support they need or want in caring for children. Here are just a few resources for caregivers who want information on learning activities, safe environments, and supporting children's social and emotional development.

  • Free Parenting and Caregiver Support. Caring for children can be challenging. Sometimes caregivers or parents just need a pair of listening ears to help troubleshoot a difficult moment. The Family Help Line offers a toll-free, confidential number for people caring for children: 1.800.932.HOPE.
  • Play and Learn Activities. Communities throughout Washington offer Play & Learn groups where caregivers and parents can come together to build relationships, share common experiences and wisdom, and gather resources and information. For more information, contact the Child Care Resource and Referral Network at 1.800.446.1114. For sites in King County, visit Child Care Resources.
  • Building Community Connections. Many public libraries offer story times. Young children and their caregivers come together to share stories, meet other children and caregivers, and build community connections.
  • Resource Booklet. Child Care Resources of King County offers a booklet just for Family, Friends and Neighbor caregivers.
