Through the Born Learning Washington campaign, parents, businesses and communities received outreach, support, and national Born Learning educational materials. The materials help teach how children can have fun and learn from everyday moments.
The Born Learning Washington campaign is a successful partnership that resulted in distribution of early education information and materials to a wide variety of individuals and the formation of new community connections. The recent economic downturn has required DEL to concentrate funding to preserve direct services to children and families. DEL is not currently funding Born Learning activities.
The Born Learning Washington campaign included parent education, family support, K-12, and early childhood policy. Thrive by Five Washington coordinated the Washington state version of this national campaign through 10 locally led campaigns, each with its own local partnership.
The local campaigns covered 20 of Washington’s 39 counties and involved more than 100 local partner organizations. In an exciting partnership with Thrive By Five, the following entities delivered Born Learning education and materials in Washington:
In a final report to DEL, Thrive by Five noted that a wide variety of individuals benefited from the campaign including:
- parents
- grandparents
- foster parents
- tribal families
- family, friend, and neighbor providers
- licensed child care providers
- early childhood educators and professionals
- library staff
- child advocates
- health and mental health professionals
- community and business partners
- law enforcement
In all, Thrive by Five reported that:
- About 15,560 face-to-face contacts were made through meetings, presentations, work groups, child care site visits, home visits, Read & Play story times, Play & Learn groups, parenting classes, support groups, trainings, Born Learning fairs, Born Learning Trail open houses, tables at conferences, and other various events.
- More than 13,500 e-updates were sent to diverse groups across the state with early learning policy news and Born Learning Washington information about the importance of high quality early learning experiences, including links to Born Learning Web sites.
- More than 72,000 individuals received Born Learning materials in English or Spanish.
- Reported media activity reached over 2.8 million individuals (duplicated) via cable TV broadcasts, advertising, news stories, editorials, articles, talk shows, interviews, bus ads, billboards, and Public Service Announcements in English and Spanish.
- More than 140 champions took action. “Champions” are what the Born Learning Washington campaign partners call people who take action to make early learning a top priority.
- Born Learning campaigns achieved 44 contacts with state senators and representatives to advocate for effective early learning policy and increased investments.
