DEL funds 22 community projects to provide parent education, support

OLYMPIA – After receiving more than 80 proposals, the Department of Early Learning (DEL) has selected 22 projects in 17 counties to provide funding for culturally relevant, innovative services supporting underserved parents in healthy family development and early learning.

The selected proposals include projects that will:

  • Offer parent education to rural college students to help them achieve the balance needed to juggle the complex demands of parenting, college, and work.
  • Support a traveling science and math display at local community centers so parents and caregivers can bring their children to explore math and science concepts in a hands-on setting.
  • Bring together east African refugees to talk with each other about how to help their children transition into traditional American schools. They’ll discuss how to talk with child care providers and school staff about what their child needs and how their child learns best.

DEL will disseminate about $320,000 to the local projects, which will also support services for teen parents, grandparents raising children, public libraries offering kindergarten readiness activities to parents and caregivers, and incarcerated parents and caregivers working together to raise children.
